(1 Corinthians 9:19-27) – “By all means!”
This is one of my favorite passages in the NT. It’s incredibly challenging, but reveals so much of what a gospel-centered heart should look like.
To continue this discussion about laying down rights, Paul mentions his main purpose in doing so in his own life.
To win souls for Christ!
Of course, there were many things Paul could’ve done with his life having already received God’s grace in salvation.
He chose to leverage his freedom to see as many people saved as possible! To him, nothing else was worth living for.
Paul sacrificed his own culture and adapted to the cultures of those around him so that he could more effectively reach people in those cultures.
He was going to do whatever it took to make sure the most people could hear the Gospel.
That’s how a runner wins their race, by doing whatever it takes to be the best and most prepared.
Paul treated this the same way. If he wanted to do great things for God, it would require him to make incredible sacrifices for the sake of winning the prize!
The glory of this prize outweighs the pain of the process.
The process requires discipline, death-to-self, and much prayer. It is a worthy adventure.
How much sacrifice have we made to reach those around us? That’s a tough question to ask sometimes. How much do we really care?
I hope we’re willing to echo Paul’s sentiments in word AND deed.
May we be willing to do all that’s necessary to save anyone who will hear!
